CHAPTER TEN

SUNLIGHT GLINTED off his wife’s dark-auburn hair.

Perched as far away from him as she could manage on the bench they shared, she attacked her peach cone with zest. She’d loved Nonie’s Hand Dipped Ice Cream Parlor since her Uncle Ford had staked Nonie the nest egg that put her first, small shop up on the boardwalk.

When Dan came along, their family visits had assisted Nonie with her ambition to move into larger quarters, which Alan had built. He turned to Cate, but whatever inane remark he’d been on the verge of saying about their family history with Nonie’s ice cream died on his lips.

With the tip of her tongue, Cate dragged a trail through the melting, frozen treat. As if she sensed his interest, she glanced his way. A drop of peach lingered on the corner of her lip. Alan forced himself to look away.

Maybe he wasn’t as bad as she thought, but he certainly had illicit designs on a woman who no longer knew him from Adam. Didn’t matter. He hadn’t forgotten her.

The ten days he’d lived without his wife had taught him one thing. He had no idea what his wife wanted from him, and he wasn’t likely to stumble onto the key to her heart and mind. When she’d told him to leave, he’d thought he might die. He hadn’t gone home, because he hadn’t wanted Dan to see him in such a defenseless state.

He’d parked about a mile from their house and wandered into the dunes. He’d needed several hours to work himself from the age of ten, deserted, unloved, unwanted, back into manhood, where he had a choice about the amount of grief he took from a woman. Even a woman he loved. And how could he stop loving Cate?

Wandering their empty house, he’d realized Cate was different since the accident. She hummed now. All the time. Melodies that lingered in his head and annoyed him for days at a time.

Until she’d taken her songs away and turned him into a guy who thought with his broken heart. This new Cate made him crazy, where his Cate had tried to make him happy.

“Dad, you’re melting.” Dan held out his hand. “What is that? Mississippi Mud? I’ll take it if you don’t want to finish.”

Alan bit a chunk of chocolate and nuts and marshmallow. “It’s good,” he said.

“Are you going to eat it?” Dan stood, digging for change in his pocket. “I think I’ll get one, too.”

With a bemused look on her face, Cate watched him walk away.

“Hollow leg,” Alan said.

“I’m envious. Too many of these.” She paused for a lick that sent his thoughts on another erotic wild-goose chase. “And Dr. Davis will fire me as her patient.”

“How do you feel?”

Her stomach seemed to have grown in the past week. The mint-green dress that belted at her back draped in clinging folds around her distended belly.

“I’m fine. A little dizzy this week, and my back aches.”

Peach ice cream dripped down her wrist. Once he would have eased over and cleaned that for her, but now he passed her a napkin.
